Kia Pro Cee’d GT 2014 – no power under full throttle

On 14. 11. 2024 I encountered a issue with my Kia Pro Cee’d GT 2014 (engine is G4FJ with 204 ps).

The car was driving normally up until going on the highway where I put the gas pedal all the way to the floor.

An issue was felt, where there was pulsing power (some power and then no power and again power…). But again, this was only during WOT (Wide open throttle). So I tried it a couple of times and eventually a engine light came on which was blinking, and after around 5 seconds it went away.

So this was really weird. I phoned up my mechanic which put the car to the tester and found out that cylinders 2 and 4 were misfiring.

We changed the coil packs of cylinders 2 and 4 and the issue was resolved. The mechanic and I had no idea how 2 coils could die at the same time. This was really unlucky.

It was indeed confirmed later by testing the faulty coils that they were bad, it was not just coincidence.

One thing that I did notice however, after changing the coil packs was, that the WOT acceleration is a lot smoother than before. Before there was a noticeable vibration under full throttle which might have been an early warning that the coil packs are on it’s way out.

The new fear now is, that 2 old coil packs are still in the car, meaning they can go out at any time.

The old coil packs were original genuine Hyundai/Kia coil packs – part number: 27301-2B110

The new coil packs that were put in are Delphi and Denso (yes we had to mix two brands because there was not stock of 4 coil packs anywhere).
